Mercedes-Benz B Class: W246 and W247 generations, engines and trims

Mercedes-Benz B Class — a compact MPV with a higher seating position, designed for those who want a prestigious badge and a practical family car. We look at the two most popular used generations — W246 (2011–2018) and W247 (from 2018), their engines, trim levels and what to check before buying.

The B Class in brief

The first B Class (W245) was produced from 2005–2011, but today the used market mostly sees W246 and W247 generations. Both are built on the same platform as the contemporary A Class and CLA, but the B Class is taller, roomier at the rear and has a larger boot.

The B Class appeals to older drivers and families: it's easy to get in and out of, there's plenty of legroom in the back, and the cabin is quiet and well-built. There are no sporty AMG versions — this is a car for relaxed, comfortable driving.

How W246 and W247 differ

W246 (2011–2018) — the most affordable way to get a modern B Class. The model was refreshed at the end of 2014: bumpers and headlights were changed, and the infotainment system was improved. Most cars now have high mileage, so the key things are the technical condition and service history.

W247 (from 2018) — the more modern generation with the MBUX infotainment system, voice control and large screens in the instrument cluster and centre. The car has become even roomier, with more driver assistance systems, and later a plug-in hybrid B 250 e was added.

2022 W247 facelift: revised headlights and bumpers, petrol engines gain a mild hybrid system, and the manual gearbox is ditched. If the budget allows, the W247 is the better choice thanks to its equipment and safety systems.

Engines and gearboxes

The W246 range once featured the popular B 180 and B 200 petrols (1.6 l) and the B 180 CDI, B 200 CDI, and B 220 CDI diesels (from 2015, these became the B 180 d, B 200 d, and B 220 d). The base B 180 CDI often came with a 1.5 l engine co-developed with Renault. The electric B 250 e was also produced in small numbers.

The W247 range features the B 180 and B 200 petrols with a 1.3 l engine (136 and 163 hp), and the B 250 with a 2.0 l (224 hp); diesels include the B 200 d and B 220 d with a 2.0 l (150 and 190 hp). The plug-in hybrid B 250 e can cover part of the journey on electric power alone.

Gearboxes come as a 6-speed manual or 7G-DCT or 8G-DCT dual-clutch automatic. Most used cars in the market come with the automatic.

What to check when buying a used B-Class

Test the dual-clutch gearbox by moving off, driving in traffic, and reversing — any hesitation or delay could indicate issues with the clutch or control unit. Ask if the gearbox oil has been changed.

A cold engine shouldn't make any prolonged whining noises. For diesel cars that have done a lot of city driving, check the particulate filter (DPF), EGR valve, and on the W247, the AdBlue system.

In the W247, check that the MBUX screens, camera, and assist systems are working smoothly, and in the B 250 e, ensure the battery is charging properly. Since the B-Class is often a family car, thoroughly inspect the interior and check the ride against the service and maintenance records.

Frequently asked questions

How does the B-Class differ from the A-Class?

The B-Class is taller, offers more rear space and a larger boot, and is easier to get into. The A-Class is smaller and sportier, making it more suitable for one or two people.

Which B-Class generation is best to buy used?

If modern equipment and safety are important — go for the W247. If budget is a concern, look for a W246 post-2014 facelift, with a clear service history.

Is the B-Class suitable for a family?

Yes — it's one of the most practical compact Mercedes-Benz cars: plenty of rear space, easy to fit child seats, and a large boot.

Which B-Class engine is the most economical?

The most economical are the diesel B 180 d and B 200 d. If you mostly drive in the city, it's often more sensible to choose a petrol engine, as the diesel particulate filter needs longer journeys.
