Mercedes-Benz C class: W205 and W206 generations, engines and trims

Mercedes-Benz C class — the most compact classic Mercedes saloon and estate, a direct rival to the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. We look at the two latest generations — W205 (2014–2021) and W206 (from 2021): engines, trims, their comparison and what to check when buying a used car.

C class in brief

C class generations are marked with codes: W202, W203, W204, W205 and W206. The letter W stands for saloon, S for estate (Mercedes calls it “Estate” or “T-Modell”), C for coupé, and A for convertible. The W205 generation had all four body styles, while the W206 is only available as a saloon and estate.

The C class is valued for its comfortable ride, quiet, high-quality interior and prestige. Most versions come with rear-wheel drive, while 4MATIC offers all-wheel drive. Compared to the BMW 3 Series, the C class is more focused on comfort than sporty driving.

W205 and W206 — what's the difference

W205 (2014–2021) — the most popular generation in the Lithuanian used market: plenty of supply, the interior still looks luxurious, and the 2018 facelift models got newer engines, the option to order a digital instrument cluster and an improved infotainment system.

The W206 (from 2021) borrows heavily from the S-Class: a large vertical central screen, MBUX system, and a digital instrument cluster across all versions. All engines are four-cylinder with a 48V mild hybrid system or plug-in hybrids, and the plug-in hybrid C 300 e battery allows for significantly more electric range than previous hybrids.

Engines and transmissions

In Lithuania, the W205 is most commonly found with the C 220 d diesel (pre-facelift: 2.1L, around 170HP, post-facelift: newer 2.0L, around 194HP). Petrol options include the C 180, C 200, and C 300, with the most powerful being the AMG C 43 and C 63. There were also plug-in hybrids like the C 350 e, later the C 300 e, and the diesel C 300 de.

The W206 is primarily based around the C 200 and C 300 petrol engines, C 220 d and C 300 d diesel engines, and the plug-in hybrid C 300 e. The AMG versions, C 43 and C 63, also feature four-cylinder engines.

Most cars come with an automatic transmission: earlier W205 models often have the 7G-Tronic, later W205 and all W206 models feature the 9-speed 9G-Tronic. Manual transmissions are rare.

What to check when buying a used C-Class

For diesel cars that have done a lot of city driving, check the particulate filter (DPF) and EGR system. Newer diesels require AdBlue fluid—errors in the AdBlue system (pump, heater, NOx sensors) can be expensive to fix, so there shouldn't be any warnings on the instrument cluster.

A cold engine should not rattle — this could indicate wear in the timing chain or its tensioner. The automatic gearbox should shift smoothly; check if the transmission fluid has been changed. If the car has an air suspension (AIRMATIC), it should not sag when stationary.

For the W206, check if the software has been updated and look for any electrical system faults. For all cars — verify the mileage against service records and the vehicle's history, and inspect the body for repainted parts.

Trim levels (equipment lines)

Mercedes-Benz trim levels are called lines; their names and equipment vary by market and year.

Elegance

W204

A classic, comfort-oriented line from the previous generation.

  • Traditional grille and star emblem on the engine cover
  • Chrome exterior details
  • Often — wood trim in the cabin

Avantgarde

W204, W205, W206

The most popular line — slightly sportier, yet still comfortable.

  • Grille with a large star
  • Light-alloy wheels

Exclusive

W205

An elegant line for those who appreciate classic Mercedes style.

Mercedes-AMG C 43 / C 63

Pros

  • A comfortable, quiet ride
  • A high-quality, luxurious interior
  • Efficient diesels and smooth 9G-Tronic transmission
  • A wide range, especially the W205 generation

Cons

  • More expensive servicing and parts than mass-market brands
  • Less rear space than the Passat or Superb
  • Complex electronics and the AdBlue system can become costly as they age

Frequently asked questions

Which C-Class generation is best to buy used?

For many buyers, the best choice is the refreshed 2018–2021 W205: newer engines, 9G-Tronic transmission, and a more affordable price than the W206. Choose the W206 if the latest tech and infotainment are important.

C 220 d or C 200 — which to choose?

If you cover a lot of miles per year, especially in the city, the C 220 d is more economical. For mostly city driving, the petrol C 200 is more sensible, as the diesel's particulate filter needs longer journeys.

Saloon or estate?

The estate (Estate) has a larger, more practical boot, making it better suited to families and long trips, while driving almost as smoothly as the saloon. The saloon is more appealing to those who value a classic, elegant look.
