Mercedes-Benz GLC — a mid-sized luxury SUV that replaced the GLK in 2015. It's one of the most popular Mercedes-Benz models, so we're looking at both generations — X253 (2015–2022) and X254 (from 2022): engines, trim levels, and what to check before buying used.
The GLC is technically close to the C-Class and comes in two body styles: the standard SUV and the sleek GLC Coupé. Most models sold in Europe come with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.
The GLC is praised for its quiet, comfortable ride, high-quality interior, and excellent diesel engines. It's a direct rival to the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, but it's more focused on comfort than sportiness.
X253 (2015–2022) — the most popular generation in the used market. Compared to the GLK, it's much roomier and more modern. The 2019 update brought new headlights front and rear, introduced the MBUX infotainment system with voice control, and new engines.
X254 (from 2022) is slightly larger, with a big vertical centre screen and a digital instrument cluster in the cabin. All engines feature a 48V mild hybrid system or are plug-in hybrids, with a significantly greater electric range than the previous generation. Optional equipment includes rear-wheel steering.
For most buyers, the real choice is the X253 post-2019 update: modern, but much cheaper than the X254.
The X253's most popular diesels are the 220d (around 170 hp before the facelift, around 195 hp after) and the 250d (around 204 hp), with the 200d and 300d added post-facelift. Petrol engines include the 250 and 300 (200 and 300 post-facelift). Plug-in hybrids are the 350e, later the 300e, and the diesel 300de.
The X254 offers petrol engines in 200 and 300, diesels in 220d and 300d, and plug-in hybrids in 300e, 400e, and 300de. The sportiest versions are the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 and GLC 63, available in both generations.
Almost all models come with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which is smooth and reliable if the oil is changed on time.
For diesel cars, check the AdBlue system, diesel particulate filter (DPF), and EGR — especially if the car has done a lot of city driving. Ask if the manufacturer's recall work has been done: some diesel GLCs required mandatory engine software updates.
If the car has air suspension (Air Body Control), it shouldn't sag on one corner when parked. During the test drive, ensure the gearbox shifts smoothly, without jolts.
Check all the electronics — the infotainment system, cameras, and electrically operated tailgate. Many GLCs are imported, so check the service history and MOT records, and inspect the body for repainted parts.

For most buyers, the best choice is the X253 post-2019 facelift with the 220d or 300d engine and AMG Line trim. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 is only worth considering if you're after a truly sporty car.
For many buyers, the best choice is the X253 post-2019 facelift: it has the MBUX infotainment system and newer engines, but costs significantly less than the X254. The X254 is worth considering if you prioritise the latest tech or want a plug-in hybrid with a substantial electric range.
The GLC Coupe has a sloping rear end, making it look sportier, but there's less headroom in the back and a smaller boot. The mechanics and engines are essentially the same.
Yes, for daily driving and trips, the 220d is usually more than sufficient. If you often drive fully loaded or with a trailer, the more powerful 250d or 300d will be a better match.
