BMW 3 Series — the sportiest compact executive saloon and estate, considered the benchmark for driving pleasure since 1975. We review the two most popular generations on the used market — the F30 (2011–2019) and G20 (from 2019): engines, trims, comparison, and what to check before buying.
Generations are designated by the codes: E21, E30, E36, E46, E90, F30, and the current G20. The estate version is called the Touring (F31, G21). Most versions are rear-wheel drive, with xDrive models featuring all-wheel drive.
The 3 Series is prized for its sharp steering, excellent chassis, powerful yet frugal engines, and slick 8-speed automatic transmission. The trade-off is higher maintenance costs and slightly less rear legroom than some larger rivals.
The F30 (2011–2019) is the most popular generation on the used market: plentiful supply, a wide engine range, and accessible pricing. A 2015 facelift brought new-generation engines and a refreshed interior.
The G20 (from 2019) is larger, stiffer, and packed with more tech: a next-gen digital cockpit, advanced driver assists, and plug-in hybrids like the 320e and 330e. A 2022 facelift added a large curved display.
The most popular diesels are the 318d, 320d, and 330d. The F30 generation used N47 diesels up until around 2015, after which they were replaced by the newer B47 units. Petrol options include the 318i, 320i, and 330i, while the heavy hitters are the 335i and 340i, alongside the M340i in the G20 generation.
The vast majority of cars feature the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, widely regarded as one of the best in the business. Manual gearboxes are a rare find.
On early F30 diesels (N47), the timing chain is located at the back of the engine and is prone to stretching — listen out for any rattling or whining on a cold startup. Always check if the chain has already been replaced.
Oil leaks are a common BMW trait (typically from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets). It’s also beneficial for the automatic gearbox to have a fluid change history, even though the manufacturer doesn't prescribe servicing it.
Many F30s ride on run-flat tyres, resulting in a firmer ride. Check the suspension, particularly the transfer case on xDrive versions.
BMW trim levels are known as lines; their naming and equipment vary by market and year.
Base line with more standard equipment.
Sportier appearance and seats.
An elegant line focused on comfort.
A brighter, modern design line.
The most popular trim on the used market — sporty looks and suspension setup.
| Advantage | Sport Line | Luxury Line | M Sport | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | For the practical buyer | For a sporty look | For comfort and elegance | For sporty driving |
| Exterior | Standard | Black accents | Chrome | M Aerodynamic package |
| Seats | Standard | Sports | Comfort seats, often leather | Sports |
| Suspension | Standard | Standard | Standard | Sportier, firmer |
| Used market price (relative) | € | €€ | €€ | €€€ |
M Sport is the most sought-after and best value-retaining line. If comfort on Lithuanian roads is a priority, opt for the Advantage or Luxury Line with standard suspension.
Post-2015 facelift with the B47 diesel or B48 petrol engine — yes, if regularly serviced. For early N47 diesels, checking the timing chain is essential.
For most buyers, the 320d: economical, punchy, and widely available. For those looking for more power, the 330d or 330i; for those with charging capabilities, the 330e.
The Touring estate has a larger and more practical boot with a separately opening rear window, while driving almost identically to the saloon. For a family, the Touring is usually the more sensible choice.
