BMW X3: generations, production years and listings.
The BMW X3 is a mid-sized luxury SUV that has combined a practical body with BMW's sporty handling since 2003. It's incredibly popular in the Lithuanian used-car market, so we're taking a look at the two most common generations — the F25 (2010–2017) and G01 (2017–2024): engines, trim levels, and what you need to check before buying.
X3 generations are coded as E83, F25, G01, and from 2024, the G45. Most X3s sold in Lithuania come with xDrive all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox, although the F25 and G01 generations also offered rear-wheel-drive sDrive versions.
The X3 is praised for its precise handling, economical diesels, and the fact that it's spacious enough for a family but not as large and expensive to run as the X5. On the downside, it has pricier parts and servicing than regular SUVs, so the technical condition is more important than the trim level.
The F25 (2010–2017) was significantly larger and more refined than the original E83 generation. The 2014 facelift refreshed the front end and brought newer diesels. Today, it's the most affordable way to get a relatively modern X3, with a wide range available.
The G01 (2017–2024) is roomier, quieter, and more tech-laden: a digital driver's display, a larger infotainment screen, more driver-assistance systems, and the addition of the plug-in hybrid xDrive30e. The 2021 facelift brought larger kidney grilles, slimmer headlights, and diesels got a 48V mild-hybrid system.
The latest G45 generation (from 2024) is still rare in the used market, so for most buyers the realistic choice is the late F25 or G01, ideally post-2021 facelift.
In Lithuania, the most popular is the xDrive20d with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel (around 184–190hp). More powerful and refined six-cylinder 3.0-litre diesels: F25 generation xDrive30d and xDrive35d, G01 — xDrive30d and M40d. The F25 generation also had less powerful sDrive18d and xDrive18d versions.
Petrols: xDrive20i, F25 generation — xDrive28i and xDrive35i, G01 — xDrive30i and the sporty M40i with a six-cylinder engine. The G01 generation also had the plug-in hybrid xDrive30e and the very powerful X3 M and X3 M Competition. The electric iX3 is a separate model.
Almost all F25 and G01 cars have the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, which is considered reliable and smooth. Manual gearboxes are rare, mostly in early F25s.
Early F25 xDrive20d and xDrive18d engines (N47, up to around 2014) were notorious for timing chain issues — when starting a cold engine, there should be no rattling from the rear of the engine. Ask if the chain has been replaced and if the manufacturer's recall work has been done (diesel BMWs had EGR coolers changed).
During a test drive in xDrive mode, slowly turn the steering wheel to ensure there's no binding or braking sensation — this could indicate issues with the transfer case. BMWs are prone to oil leaks through the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket.
For diesel cars that have done a lot of city driving, check the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR system. Many X3s are imported, so check the mileage against service records and the vehicle's history, and inspect the body for repainted parts.
BMW trim levels are called lines or packages; their names and equipment vary by market and year.

For most buyers, the best choice is the G01 xDrive20d or xDrive30d with the xLine or M Sport line. The M40d and M40i are worth considering only if power is crucial and you're prepared for higher maintenance costs.
For many buyers, the best choice is the G01 generation, especially after the 2021 refresh: it's roomier, more modern, and has newer engines. If your budget is tight, opt for a later (post-2014) F25 with a clear service history.
Yes, for daily driving and family trips, the xDrive20d is usually more than adequate. If you often tow a trailer or drive with a fully loaded car, the xDrive30d with its six-cylinder engine will be smoother and quieter.
The X5 is larger, more luxurious, and can have a third row of seats, but its maintenance and parts are more expensive. The X3 is more compact and easier to manoeuvre in the city, and its space is sufficient for most families.
It is, if you have the ability to charge regularly at home or at work and mostly drive short distances. On long journeys without charging, it typically uses more fuel than the diesel, and the boot is slightly smaller.
