Mercedes-Benz E-Class: W212, W213 and W214 generations, engines and trims

Mercedes-Benz E-Class — the business-class saloon and estate, long regarded as the benchmark for comfort and longevity. We look at the W212 and W213 generations – the most popular on the used market – plus the latest W214: engines, trims, how they compare and what to check before buying.

E-Class in brief

The E-Class name has been used since 1993, and generations are identified by codes: W124, W210, W211, W212, W213 and W214. The letter W denotes the saloon, S the estate (Mercedes calls it 'Estate' or 'T-Modell'). Most versions have rear-wheel drive, while 4MATIC is all-wheel drive.

The E-Class is prized for its exceptional ride comfort, quiet cabin, spacious boot (especially in the estate) and economical diesels, which makes it popular with high-mileage drivers and taxi drivers. As a result, used examples often have very high mileage.

W212, W213 and W214 — how they differ

W212 (2009–2016) — an angular, robust and simpler generation, today the most affordable way into a relatively modern E-Class. The 2013 facelift changed the front-end design (four separate headlights gave way to single units) and some of the engines.

W213 (2016–2023) — the most popular generation on the used market: a modern cabin with large screens, plenty of driver-assistance systems and next-generation diesels. The 2020 facelift changed the looks, steering wheel and infotainment system (MBUX), and some engines gained a 48 V mild-hybrid system.

W214 (from 2023) is the most technologically advanced E-Class: a digital cabin, an optional separate passenger screen, and all engines feature either mild-hybrid technology or plug-in hybrid power. There are fewer on the used market for now, and prices are considerably higher.

Engines and gearboxes

In the W212 generation, the most common are the E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI four-cylinder diesels, plus the E 350 CDI (later E 350 BlueTEC) with a V6 diesel. Petrol models include the E 200, E 250 and E 350, with the E 500 and E 63 AMG at the top of the range.

In the W213 generation, the most popular is the E 220 d with a next-generation 2,0 l diesel (around 194 hp). There were also the E 200 d, E 300 d and six-cylinder E 350 d and E 400 d, petrol E 200, E 300 and E 450, plug-in hybrids E 300 e and E 350 e, plus the diesel E 300 de, and sporty AMG E 43, E 53 and E 63 versions.

Most W212s have a 7-speed 7G-Tronic automatic, while the W213 and W214 use a 9-speed 9G-Tronic. The rear suspension on estates often has automatic self-levelling, and in the All-Terrain version air suspension is standard.

What to check when buying a used E-Class

Check the mileage particularly carefully — against service records and inspection history, because the E-Class is often used as a taxi or company car. Wear on the seats, steering wheel and pedals should match the stated mileage.

The injectors of early W212 four-cylinder diesels (around 2009–2011) were known for failing — many have already been replaced, but it's worth checking. V6 diesels are prone to oil leaks from the oil cooler gaskets. Newer diesels require AdBlue — there should be no warnings about this system on the dashboard.

If air suspension is fitted, the car should not sink when parked. The automatic gearbox should shift smoothly, and in W213 and W214 cars check that all driver-assistance systems work and that there are no electronic faults.

Trim levels (equipment lines)

Mercedes-Benz trims are called lines; their names and equipment vary by market and year.

Elegance

W212

The classic, comfort-oriented line.

  • Traditional grille and star on the bonnet
  • Chrome exterior details
  • Often — wood trim in the cabin

Avantgarde

W212, W213, W214

The most popular line — a slightly sportier appearance, but a comfortable chassis.

  • Grille with a large star
  • Alloy wheels
  • Often — LED headlights

Exclusive

W213, W214

An elegant line for fans of classic Mercedes style.

  • Traditional grille and star on the bonnet
  • More upmarket interior trim
  • Often — leather seats

AMG Line

W213, W214

The most sought-after line on the used market — sporty looks with a standard engine (in the W212 generation, the AMG Sports package played a similar role).

  • AMG bumpers and larger wheels
  • Sports seats and a sports steering wheel
  • Often — sporty, lower suspension

All-Terrain

W213, W214 (estate)

An estate with raised ground clearance and all-wheel drive.

  • 4MATIC all-wheel drive
  • Air suspension with ride-height adjustment
  • Underbody protection

AMG Line holds its value best, but the E-Class's strength is comfort, so Avantgarde or Exclusive with smaller alloy wheels suit Lithuanian roads very well. The All-Terrain is worth considering if you need all-wheel drive and greater ground clearance.

Pros

  • Exceptional ride comfort and a quiet cabin
  • Economical and long-lasting diesels
  • Spacious boot, especially in the estate
  • Large supply and a wide choice

Cons

  • Many cars with very high mileage
  • More expensive servicing and parts
  • Complex electronics and air suspension can prove expensive as the car ages

Frequently asked questions

Which E-Class generation is the best used buy?

For most buyers, the best choice is the W213, ideally a facelifted post-2020 example: modern, economical and it won't look dated for a long time yet. The W212 suits a tighter budget, but its condition and mileage need to be checked very carefully.

Which E-Class engine should you choose?

For most buyers, it's the four-cylinder diesel E 220 d (W213) or E 220 CDI / E 250 CDI (W212), provided they are serviced on time. If you do most of your driving in the city, a petrol E 200 or a plug-in hybrid is worth considering.

How do the E-Class saloon and estate differ?

The estate has one of the largest boots in its class and often features automatic rear suspension height adjustment, making it ideal for families and long journeys. The saloon is a little lighter and will appeal more to those who appreciate classic styling.
