The ML was one of Mercedes-Benz's first luxury SUVs, conceived as a spacious family car with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Over almost two decades it went through three generations: W163 (1997–2005), W164 (2005–2011) and W166 (2011–2015).

In Lithuania's used-car market, the W164 and W166 generations make up most of the supply, usually with diesel engines. It is a large, heavy vehicle, so running and repair costs tend to be higher than those of compact SUVs.

Which generation to choose

The W163 is the oldest generation and today is most often bought as a cheap SUV or a hobby car. Before buying, it's essential to check the body for corrosion and the condition of the running gear, while equipment and safety systems are far more modest than in later generations.

The W164 (2005–2011) is a roomier, more modern and more technologically advanced car with a very wide market. This-generation ML is chosen because you can get a generously equipped car for a relatively low price, but a documented service history is important.

The W166 (2011–2015) is the newest and most modern ML generation, with more economical engines, a more modern interior and more driver-assistance systems. If the budget allows, most buyers go for this one.

Engines and transmissions

In the W164 generation, the most popular choices were the V6 diesels (ML 280 CDI and 320 CDI), the petrol ML 350, as well as more powerful V8 variants (such as the ML 500) and the high-performance ML 63 AMG. From 2006 onwards, the 7-speed 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission became the default.

Moving to the W166 generation, you'll find the more efficient four-cylinder ML 250 BlueTEC, the V6 diesel ML 350 BlueTEC, petrol V6 and V8 variants, and the flagship ML 63 AMG. Most models are paired with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and feature all-wheel drive.

Because trim levels and engine options vary depending on the market and production year, always verify the exact specification using the VIN and vehicle documentation.

What to look for when buying a used ML

Start with the suspension: if the car is equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension, check that the body doesn't sag and that the compressor isn't cycling constantly. Suspension repairs and complex electrical issues can be expensive.

If you're looking at a BlueTEC diesel, check the condition of the AdBlue system and the particulate filter, and ask when the transmission fluid was last changed. A pre-purchase computer diagnostic check is highly recommended to look for any engine oil leaks.

On older examples, inspect the sills, wheel arches, and rear tailgate for signs of corrosion. Always verify the mileage against service records and MOT history, as SUVs frequently cover high mileages.
