The Audi A4 is a mid-size sedan and estate (Avant), one of the most popular premium class cars in Lithuania's used market. We're looking at two of the most common generations — B8 (2007–2015) and B9 (2015–2024): engines, gearboxes, trims, and what to check before buying.
The A4 has been in production since 1994, with generations marked as B5, B6, B7, B8, and B9. Alongside the sedan and estate Avant, the B8 and B9 generations included the larger allroad quattro version, while the sportiest were the S4 and RS 4 (the latter was only produced as an Avant in these generations). In 2024, the A4 was replaced by the new A5, making B9 the final generation with this name.
The A4 is praised for its high-quality, well-built interior, quiet highway cruising, and quattro all-wheel drive, which is a significant advantage in Lithuanian winters. Many cars also come with front-wheel drive. The technology is often shared with other Volkswagen Group models, but servicing is usually more expensive than for a Passat or Superb.
The B8 (2007–2015) was significantly larger than its predecessor, with the front axle moved further forward, resulting in better handling and more interior space. The 2011 update brought more economical engines, a refined exterior, and interior. Today, it's the most affordable way to get a modern A4, although many cars already have high mileage.
B9 (2015–2024) is lighter, quieter, and more tech-savvy: you could order the digital instrument cluster Audi virtual cockpit and matrix LED headlights. The 2019 update refreshed the styling, added a mild hybrid system (MHEV) to most engines, and the MMI system got a touchscreen.
If your budget allows, go for a B9, ideally post-2019 update. Look for a B8 from post-2011 update with a clear service history.
B8s are most commonly found with 2.0 TDI diesels (around 120–177 hp), 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines, and more powerful ones with 2.7 and 3.0 TDI V6s. Transmissions include manual, stepless multitronic (front-wheel-drive cars only) and 7-speed S tronic.
B9s primarily come with 2.0 TDI (around 122–204 hp) and 2.0 TFSI (around 150–265 hp; early years also had 1.4 TFSI), with the 3.0 TDI V6 packing around 218–286 hp. Since 2018, Audi has designated versions with numbers, e.g., 35 TDI, 40 TDI or 45 TFSI — these indicate power class, not engine capacity. The S4 in Europe has been built with a 3.0 TDI diesel since 2019.
B9 transmissions are 6-speed manual, 7-speed S tronic or, with the V6 diesel, 8-speed tiptronic automatic.
Early B8 generation 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI engines (roughly up to 2012) are known for increased oil consumption. Ask how much oil needs topping up between changes and if the engine has been repaired.
The Multitronic gearbox should operate smoothly — any judder when moving off or a hiss when braking indicates an expensive repair is on the horizon. Test the S tronic by pulling away gently and driving slowly in first gear, and ask about oil changes.
Check the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR valve on diesel cars, and the AdBlue system on newer models. Verify the service history and MOT records, and on quattro models, check that all four tyres are evenly worn.
Names and equipment vary by market and year; we list the most common trims and lines found in Europe.

For most buyers, the best choice is the advanced or S line with a 2.0 TDI or 2.0 TFSI engine. If you often drive on rough roads or want an estate with more ground clearance, go for the allroad quattro.
Many buyers opt for the B9, especially after the 2019 refresh: it's more modern, quieter and comes with more safety systems. The B8 is cheaper, but it's worth choosing one post-2011 refresh and only after checking the service history.
Only if the gearbox operates perfectly and there are service records. A safer bet is the S tronic, manual gearbox or quattro version, which didn't use the multitronic.
The Avant is your standard estate. The allroad quattro is the same estate but with increased ground clearance, protective body cladding and always comes with quattro all-wheel drive, making it better suited for rough roads and winter.
