Audi Q5: generations, production years and listings.
The Audi Q5 is a mid-size premium SUV, one of the most popular in its class across Europe and Lithuania. We're looking at the two most commonly found used generations — the 8R (2008–2017) and FY (2017–2024): engines, trims, and what to check before buying.
The Q5 was launched in 2008 and built on A4 underpinnings. Most models come with quattro all-wheel drive. In 2021, the sloping-roof Q5 Sportback arrived, with the sporty version dubbed the SQ5. The third-generation Q5 was unveiled in 2024.
The Q5 is praised for its elevated seating position, high-quality interior, and versatility: it's spacious enough for a family but not too large for city driving. Main rivals include the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60.
The 8R (2008–2017) is the first generation. The 2012 refresh brought more economical engines, a revised exterior, and interior. Today, it's the most affordable way to own a Q5, but most models have high mileage.
The FY (2017–2024) is lighter and more tech-savvy: you could specify a virtual cockpit instrument cluster, matrix LED headlights, and air suspension. Plug-in hybrids arrived, and the 2020 facelift updated the styling, gave the MMI system a touchscreen, and added a mild-hybrid system to most engines.
If budget allows, go for the FY — it's quieter, more economical, and safer. Look for an 8R post-2012 facelift with a clear service history.
The 8R generation most commonly features the 2.0 TDI (around 143–190 hp) and 3.0 TDI V6 (around 240–258 hp) diesel engines, with petrol options including the 2.0 TFSI, 3.2 FSI, and 3.0 TFSI. The SQ5 came with a twin-turbo 3.0 TDI (around 313–326 hp). Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, 7-speed S tronic, and for some of the more powerful engines, an 8-speed tiptronic.
The FY generation primarily offers the 2.0 TDI (35 and 40 TDI, around 150–204 hp), 3.0 TDI V6 (50 TDI, around 286 hp), 2.0 TFSI (45 TFSI, around 245–265 hp), and plug-in hybrid versions 50 and 55 TFSI e. The SQ5 in Europe is most often found with the 3.0 TDI diesel (around 340 hp).
The FY's four-cylinder engines are paired with a 7-speed S tronic and quattro ultra transmission, which disengages the rear axle when not needed to save fuel. V6 versions come with an 8-speed tiptronic automatic and a permanent quattro system.
Early 8R generation 2.0 TFSI engines (roughly up to 2012) are known for increased oil consumption — ask how much oil needs topping up between changes and if the engine has been serviced.
Test the S tronic by moving off and driving slowly in traffic, and ask about oil changes. The V6 TDI engines have their timing chains at the rear, so there shouldn't be any rattling when starting a cold engine. For diesel cars, check the DPF, EGR, and for FY generation models, the AdBlue system.
If the car has air suspension, it shouldn't have sagged overnight. The Q5 is often used for towing — check the hitch, ask how the car was used, and ensure all four tyres are evenly worn.
Names and equipment vary by market and year; in FY, equipment lines were renamed, so we list the most common in Europe.

For most buyers, the best choice is the 40 TDI with advanced or S line trim. For those who do a lot of miles or frequently tow a trailer, the 50 TDI V6 is worth considering.
If the budget allows, go for the FY: it's lighter, more economical, quieter, and comes with more safety systems. The 8R is cheaper, but it's worth choosing one from after the 2012 update and with a verified service history.
Most — yes. In some markets, front-wheel-drive 2.0 TDI versions were also sold, so it's worth checking the documents or VIN number.
For many buyers — the 2.0 TDI (or 40 TDI in the FY facelift): economical and sufficiently powerful. For high-mileage drivers or those towing a trailer — the 3.0 TDI V6. For those who need to haul stuff around the house, it's worth considering the plug-in hybrid.
