Audi Q7: 4L and 4M generations, engines and trims
Audi Q7 — a large luxury SUV with quattro all-wheel drive and the option of seven seats. We look at both generations — 4L (2005–2015) and 4M (from 2015): how they differ, which engines are most popular in Lithuania, how the trims vary and what to check when buying used.
Q7 in brief
The Q7 is Audi’s largest SUV, measuring over 5 metres in length. All models come with quattro all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox, while the third row of seats was offered as an optional extra, so you’ll find both 5- and 7-seaters on the market.
The Q7 is praised for its spacious, quiet interior, high-quality trim and powerful diesels, ideal for long journeys and towing. On the downside, it’s heavy, has expensive parts and complex technology, so when buying, focus on the technical condition and service history.
4L and 4M — how they differ
The 4L (2005–2015) was the first generation, refreshed in 2009. Today, it’s the cheapest way to get a large luxury SUV, but most models have high mileage and running costs remain high. If you’re considering a 4L, look for later models, produced after the 2009 refresh.
The 4M (from 2015) is built on a new platform and is significantly lighter — the difference is several hundred kilograms. It’s more economical, quieter, has a digital instrument cluster (Audi virtual cockpit), more driver assistance systems and optional rear-wheel drive.
2019 facelift: refreshed styling, two touchscreen infotainment systems added to the cabin, and diesels gained a 48V mild-hybrid system. Post-facelift engines are denoted by numbers — 45 TDI, 50 TDI, 55 TFSI and so on. The Q7 received another minor update in 2024.
Engines and transmissions
The most popular in Lithuania is the 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel. In the 4L generation, it offered around 230–245hp, in the 4M generation up to 2019 — 218 or 272hp, and post-facelift — 45 TDI (around 231hp) and 50 TDI (around 286hp). The 4L generation also had a V8 4.2 TDI and the rare V12 6.0 TDI.
Petrol engines: 4L — 3.6 FSI and 4.2 FSI, 4M — 3.0-litre V6 TFSI (post-facelift 55 TFSI) and in some markets a 2.0-litre TFSI. The 4M generation offered plug-in hybrids (initially the diesel Q7 e-tron, later petrol 55 and 60 TFSI e), with the sportiest version being the SQ7: initially with a V8 TDI, from 2020 with a V8 TFSI.
The 4L generation used a 6-speed, 4M an 8-speed tiptronic automatic transmission. Both are considered fairly robust, provided the oil is changed on time.
What to check when buying a used Q7
Many Q7s have air suspension: the car shouldn’t sag on one corner when parked, and the compressor shouldn’t run too long or too loudly. Replacing suspension parts and the compressor is expensive.
The timing chain for the 3.0-litre TDI engine is at the rear of the engine, so replacing it is expensive — there shouldn’t be any rattling when starting a cold engine. Check the diesel particulate filter (DPF), EGR and (in the 4M generation) AdBlue system on diesel cars, and ask if the manufacturer’s recall work has been done.
Brakes, tyres and suspension parts on large, heavy cars wear out faster — assess their condition. Check all the electronics: the MMI system, cameras, electrically adjustable seats and boot lid. Verify the service history and MOT records.

Frequently asked questions
Which Q7 generation to choose?
For most buyers, the best choice is the 4M generation: it's lighter, more efficient, and more modern. The 4L is worth considering only for its lower price and only with a verified technical condition, as its upkeep remains expensive.
Do all Q7s have seven seats?
No. The third row of seats was an optional extra, so many cars have five seats. When buying, check if the third row is actually fitted, and bear in mind that it's most comfortable for kids to ride there.
Which Q7 engine is the best?
In Lithuania, the 3.0-litre V6 TDI is most commonly chosen — it's powerful enough for a heavy car and a trailer, and fuel consumption isn't too high. V8 versions are impressive, but more expensive to run.
Is the Q7 suitable for towing a trailer?
Yes, the Q7 is often chosen for this very reason — diesel cars can tow heavy trailers (you'll find the permitted weight in the registration document). When buying a car that's done a lot of towing, check the gearbox and suspension especially carefully.
