The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a compact family MPV, and the first BMW with front-wheel drive. We take a look at the F45 and U06 generations, the most popular engines, trim levels and what to check before buying a used car.
The Active Tourer made its debut in 2014 and became BMW's first model with a transversely mounted engine and front-wheel drive. It combines a spacious, taller body with BMW's driving character, making it a good fit for families who don't want a dull "family car".
Some versions have xDrive all-wheel drive, while plug-in hybrid versions can cover a certain distance on electric power alone. On the used market, the model is most commonly offered with petrol and diesel engines.
The F45 (2014–2021) is the first generation. It is well regarded for its spacious cabin, practicality and driving experience, and it is widely available on the used market, so you can choose by trim level and engine.
The U06 (from 2021) is the second generation, with a much more modern cabin, a large curved display and more driver assistance systems. Some engines are mild hybrids, while the plug-in hybrids cover more distance on electric power alone than earlier versions.
If price is the top priority, it's worth looking at a well-maintained F45. If you want newer technology and a more modern cabin, the U06 is the better choice.
In the F45 generation, the most popular choices were the three- and four-cylinder petrol engines (for example, 216i, 218i and 220i) and diesels (216d, 218d and 220d), along with the 225xe plug-in hybrid. Gearboxes were manual or Steptronic automatic.
The U06 generation offers the 218i, 220i and 223i petrol models, the 218d and 220d diesels, and the 225e and 230e xDrive plug-in hybrids. Most cars have an automatic gearbox.
Exact power outputs depend on the version and year of manufacture, so when you're looking at a specific car, check its paperwork.
Ask for the service history and check that the engine oil and automatic gearbox fluid were changed on schedule. Once started, the engine should idle smoothly, with no unusual noises.
If you're buying a plug-in hybrid, ask about the condition of the high-voltage battery, make sure the charging port works, and try driving on electric power alone.
Check that all electronic functions work — navigation, cameras, parking sensors. On diesel cars, it's worth checking the condition of the particulate filter, especially if the car has mostly been driven in town.
Names and equipment vary by market and model year; we list the trim levels most commonly found in Europe.
A common entry-level F45 trim with comfort features.
Sportier looks and interior details.
A more elegant, comfort-focused trim.
Sporty M design and premium trim.
Plug-in hybrid versions with an electric driving mode.
| Advantage | Sport Line | Luxury Line | M Sport | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | For everyday use | For a sporty look | For comfort and looks | For dynamic driving |
| Wheels (usually) | 16–17 col. | 17–18 col. | 17–18 col. | 18–19 col. |
| Interior | Standard | Sports seats | More premium trim | M sport seats |
| Used-market price (relative) | € | €€ | €€ | €€€ |
For most buyers, Advantage or Luxury Line with an economical diesel or petrol engine will be enough. Choose M Sport for its looks and driving experience, and the plug-in hybrid if you can charge it regularly.
Yes, some versions are offered with xDrive, but most cars come with front-wheel drive. Check the exact specification against the seller’s details.
The U06 is more modern, with a better interior and newer technology, but the F45 is cheaper and still well regarded. The choice comes down to budget and the equipment you want.
Yes, if you're able to charge the car regularly and cover short distances. If you mostly do long journeys, a conventional diesel engine may be the more economical choice.
