BMW X5: F15 and G05 generations, engines and trims

BMW X5 — a large, luxurious SUV that has combined spacious interiors with sporty BMW handling since 1999. It's particularly popular in the Lithuanian used-car market, so we're looking at the two most recent generations — F15 (2013–2018) and G05 (from 2018): engines, trim levels and what to check before buying.

X5 in brief

The X5 generations are coded as E53, E70, F15 and G05. Almost all models come with xDrive all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox, and from the E70 generation onwards, a third row of seats (seven seats in total) was available for an extra cost.

The X5 is praised for its powerful yet relatively economical six-cylinder diesels, robust build and precise handling, making it drive like a smaller car. On the downside, parts and servicing are expensive, so when buying, focus on the technical condition and history rather than the trim level.

F15 and G05 — what's the difference

F15 (2013–2018) — an improved take on the E70: newer, more efficient engines, a more modern interior, and more driver-assistance systems. Today, it's the most affordable way to get a relatively modern X5, and there's a large supply in Lithuania.

G05 (from 2018) is larger, more spacious and tech-savvy: a digital instrument cluster, larger screens, more driver-assistance features, and optional air suspension on both axles. Plug-in hybrids with a six-cylinder engine can cover several tens of kilometres on electric power alone.

2023 facelift: revised front end, large curved screen in the cabin, all non-plug-in engines feature a 48V mild-hybrid system, and the plug-in hybrid xDrive45e has been replaced with the more powerful xDrive50e.

Engines and gearboxes

The most popular in Lithuania is the xDrive30d with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel (around 258hp in the F15, from roughly 265 to nearly 300hp in the G05, depending on the year). More powerful diesels include the xDrive40d and M50d, while the F15 also offered the four-cylinder xDrive25d.

Petrol engines: F15 has the xDrive35i and V8 xDrive50i, G05 offers the xDrive40i and V8 M50i (post-facelift M60i). Plug-in hybrids: F15 xDrive40e with a 2.0-litre engine, G05 has the xDrive45e and xDrive50e with a six-cylinder engine. The sportiest versions are the X5 M and X5 M Competition.

Both generations use the ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox, which is considered reliable and smooth, especially if the oil has been changed.

What to check when buying a used X5

Many X5s in Lithuania are imported, so check the service history and MOT records, and inspect the body for repainted parts and uneven gaps. Ask if all manufacturer recall work has been done (for example, diesel BMWs had EGR coolers replaced).

For diesel cars that have done a lot of urban miles, check the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR system. BMWs are prone to oil leaks past the valve cover and oil filter housing gasket, and V8 engines typically cost more to maintain and use more oil.

If fitted with air suspension, the car should not sag at one corner when parked. During a test drive, check for any judder when turning slowly (xDrive differential), and ensure that driving on „run-flat“ tyres isn’t too harsh.

Frequently asked questions

Which X5 generation to choose — F15 or G05?

The F15 is more affordable and still quite modern, making it suitable for a tighter budget. The G05 is roomier, more tech-savvy, and newer, so if your budget allows, it's usually the more sensible choice for the long haul.

Which X5 engine is the best?

For most buyers, the xDrive30d: powerful enough, relatively economical, and very common, making it easy to find parts and mechanics. Those needing to haul daily might want to consider the plug-in hybrid.

Can the BMW X5 be a seven-seater?

Yes, both the F15 and G05 were available with a third row of seats. However, most used models are five-seaters, so if you need seven seats, it's essential to check the specific listing.
