Kia Sorento: UM and MQ4 generations, engines and trims
The Kia Sorento is a large, often seven-seater SUV that appeals to families and frequent travellers in the used market. We’re looking at the two most recent generations — UM (2015–2020) and MQ4 (from 2020): engines, trims and what to check when buying used.
Sorento in brief
The Sorento has been in production since 2002. The first generation was a body-on-frame SUV, while from the second (XM, 2009) it became a unibody crossover. It shares much of its technology with the related Hyundai Santa Fe, with rivals including the Škoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace and Toyota RAV4.
Kia offers a 7-year (up to 150,000 km) manufacturer’s warranty for new cars in Europe, which transfers to subsequent owners if the car is serviced according to the manufacturer’s requirements. Therefore, when buying a newer Sorento, it’s worth checking if the warranty is still valid.
How UM and MQ4 differ
The UM generation (2015–2020) is more spacious, quieter and better equipped than the XM; the third row of seats was standard or optional in many markets. A refreshed version appeared in 2017–2018: new headlights and bumpers, an 8-speed automatic with the 2.2 CRDi, and a sportier GT-Line version added to the lineup.
The MQ4 generation (from 2020) features a new platform, a modern interior with large screens and more driver-assistance systems, with a hybrid and plug-in hybrid added to the lineup. The model was updated in Europe in 2024.
For a smaller budget, consider the UM post-facelift with the 2.2 CRDi engine, but for a modern interior, hybrid powertrain, and remaining factory warranty, go for the MQ4.
Engines and transmissions
The UM in Europe predominantly features the 2.2 CRDi diesel engine (around 200 hp); in some markets, a 2.0 CRDi and 2.4 GDi petrol engine are also offered.
The MQ4 comes with a 2.2 CRDi (202 hp) paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, a 1.6 T-GDi hybrid HEV (around 230 hp) with a 6-speed automatic, and a plug-in hybrid PHEV (around 265 hp, always with all-wheel drive).
All-wheel drive is available with most engines, and the majority of used examples come with it. The UM originally had diesel engines mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic, post-facelift usually with an 8-speed automatic.
What to check when buying a used Sorento
In diesel cars, check the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR system, especially if the car has done a lot of city driving. Automatic and dual-clutch transmissions should shift smoothly, without judders or hesitation.
If the car has a tow hitch, ask if it has towed heavy trailers — this puts extra strain on the transmission, all-wheel-drive system, and brakes. In all-wheel-drive versions, ensure the differential works without binding, and the drivetrain doesn't make noise.
Check the third row of seats and its mechanisms, in hybrids look for any error messages, and in PHEVs check the charging equipment. Verify the remaining warranty and service history with an official Kia dealer using the VIN.
Trim levels
Kia trim names vary greatly by country (e.g., in the UK, numbers are used instead); we list the German names, which are often found on cars imported into Lithuania.

Comparing MQ4 generation trims
| Vision | Spirit | Platinum | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | The practical family buyer | Comfort seekers | Those wanting everything the model offers |
| Wheels (most common) | 17–18 in. | 18–19 in. | 19 in. |
| Interior | Base | Often leather, more equipment | Luxurious interior, heated seats |
| Price in the used market (relatively) | Budget-friendly | Mid-range | Premium |
For most buyers, the best choice is the Vision or Spirit with the 2.2 CRDi engine or hybrid powertrain. The Platinum is worth considering for luxury, but the plug-in hybrid is only suitable if you have a place to charge it regularly.
Pros
- Spacious interior, often with seven seats
- Generous equipment and a comfortable ride
- Long factory warranty, transferable to the next owner
- Powerful 2.2 CRDi diesel, suitable for towing trailers
Cons
- High fuel consumption in the city, especially with all-wheel drive
- The third row of seats is best for kids
- Holds its value well, so there aren't many cheap MQ4 deals
Frequently asked questions
Which Sorento generation is best to buy used?
For many buyers, the best choice is the MQ4: more modern, with hybrid transmissions and often still under factory warranty. For a smaller budget, consider the UM post-facelift with the 2.2 CRDi engine and 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Are all Sorento models seven-seaters?
No. Seven seats were standard or optional in many markets, so you'll find five-seaters in the used market too. Before buying, check the registration documents to confirm the number of seats.
Should you choose a diesel or hybrid Sorento?
For those who do a lot of out-of-town driving and tow trailers, the 2.2 CRDi diesel is more suitable. For city dwellers, the hybrid (HEV) is more economical, and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) only makes sense if you have somewhere to charge it daily.
Does Kia warranty transfer when buying a used Sorento?
Kia's 7-year (up to 150,000 km) warranty transfers to the new owner if the car was first sold in Europe and serviced according to the manufacturer's requirements. Check the exact conditions and remaining warranty with an official Kia dealer using the VIN.
