Porsche Macan: 95B generation, electric Macan, engines and trims
The Porsche Macan is a compact, sporty SUV that’s one of the most accessible ways to get into Porsche ownership on the used market. We look at updates to the petrol Macan, the new electric Macan, the most popular engines, trims, and what to check before buying.
Macan in brief
The first Macan generation (95B) has been in production since 2014, sold in Europe until 2024, and refreshed twice — in 2018 and 2021. All cars in this generation come with all-wheel drive and a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. In 2024, a completely new, all-electric Macan was introduced, and petrol production for Europe ended.
The Macan is praised for driving more like a sports car than an SUV: the steering is precise, the ride is stable, and the engines are powerful. However, the rear seats and boot aren’t spacious, and servicing is pricier than for mainstream brands.
Which trim to choose
Early 2014–2018 models are the cheapest way to get a Macan. Their interiors still feature plenty of physical buttons on the centre console, and the choice is wide: from the 2.0-litre petrol to the S Diesel and Turbo.
The 2018 refreshed Macan got new headlights, a larger touchscreen infotainment system, and new V6 engines, but diesel versions were dropped. The 2021 update brought touch-sensitive centre console controls and more powerful engines — this is the most modern petrol Macan.
The electric Macan (from 2024) is a completely different car, built on a new platform. It's more spacious and very quick, but there aren't many used examples around yet, and it commands a higher price.
Engines and transmissions
Up to 2018, the range included the 2.0-litre petrol (around 252 hp), 3.0 V6 Macan S (around 340 hp), 3.0 V6 diesel Macan S Diesel (around 258 hp), GTS (around 360 hp) and 3.6 V6 Turbo (around 400 hp and more).
After the 2018 update, the base Macan had around 245 hp, the Macan S around 354 hp, while the GTS and Turbo got 2.9 V6 biturbo engines (around 380 and 440 hp). After the 2021 update, the base Macan and Macan T have around 265 hp, the Macan S around 380 hp, and the GTS around 440 hp.
All petrol and diesel Macans come with a 7-speed PDK transmission and all-wheel drive. Pneumatic suspension was often an optional extra.
What to check when buying a used Macan
The PDK transmission should shift quickly and smoothly, without judders or hesitation when moving off. Ask when its oil was last changed. If the car has pneumatic suspension, make sure it's not showing any faults and that the car doesn't sag after standing still.
Brakes and large-diameter tyres on the Macan are expensive, so check their wear. Macan S Diesel models were subject to a manufacturer's emissions update campaign — ask if this has been carried out.
Check the service history via the official service records. Optional extras can significantly affect a car's value, so check these via the vehicle identification number (VIN).

Frequently asked questions
Is the Macan 2.0 version too underpowered?
For daily driving, the 2.0 turbo engine is more than adequate, and the car is more pleasant to drive thanks to its lighter front end. If you want more power and that V6 sound, go for the Macan S.
Which Macan is the best to buy used?
For many buyers, the best choice is a 2018 or later refreshed Macan S, or a 2021 or later model with a more modern interior. The key is to have a history of official servicing and a well-maintained PDK gearbox.
How does the electric Macan differ from the petrol one?
The electric Macan is built on a completely new platform: it's roomier, faster, and has a newer interior, but it's a very different car. If long driving ranges without charging and a lower price are important, the petrol Macan is usually the go-to choice.
