Toyota Corolla: E170 and E210 generations, hybrids and trim levels
The Toyota Corolla is one of the world's best-selling cars, renowned for its reliability. In Lithuania, the current E210 generation with hybrid drive is especially popular. We take a look at the generations, engines and trim levels, and what you must check—especially if the car has been used for taxi or ride-hailing work.
Corolla at a glance
The Corolla has been in production since 1966. In Europe, from 2007 to 2018 the hatchback was called Auris, while the Corolla name was used only for the sedan. Since 2019, the Corolla has again been offered as a hatchback, estate (Touring Sports) and sedan.
The Corolla is prized for its reliability, low running costs and highly economical hybrids in town. Because of these traits, many E210-generation cars are used for taxi and ride-hailing services.
E170 vs E210 — what's the difference
In Europe, the E170 (2013–2019) was a sedan with simple petrol engines (1.33 and 1.6) and a 1.4 D-4D diesel. It is a simple and reliable car, but without a hybrid version and with more modest equipment.
The E210 (from 2019) is built on the TNGA platform: better handling, a more modern interior, plenty of standard safety systems and hybrid drivetrains. The 2023 update brought next-generation hybrids with more power and a new infotainment system.
Engines and transmissions
In the E210 generation, the most commonly encountered are the 1.8 Hybrid (122 hp before the update, 140 hp after) and the 2.0 Hybrid (180 hp before the update, 196 hp after). In the early period, a 1.2 turbo petrol engine was also offered.
The hybrids have a stepless e-CVT transmission, which is simple in construction and considered very reliable. The E170 generation had manual gearboxes and a CVT.
What to check when buying a used Corolla
Check whether the car has been used for taxi or ride-hailing work: such cars often have very high mileage, and a worn interior and suspension.
It is worth having the hybrid battery's condition checked at a dealership or specialist workshop. Also inspect the brake discs—hybrids often brake regeneratively, so the rear discs can rust.
Check the 12 V battery and whether all scheduled maintenance has been carried out—this matters for maintaining the manufacturer's hybrid system warranty extension terms, if applicable.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Corolla hybrid battery long-lasting?
Toyota hybrid batteries usually last a long time — many cover several hundred thousand kilometres. Even so, before buying a used car, it's worth having the battery's condition checked at a workshop.
What's the difference between the 1.8 and 2.0 Hybrid?
The 2.0 Hybrid is noticeably more powerful and quieter on the motorway, while the 1.8 Hybrid is more economical and cheaper. Around town the difference is small, so the 1.8 is enough for most.
How can you spot a former taxi?
Check the mileage against inspection records, inspect wear on the rear seats, door handles and steering wheel, and look for mounting marks on the dashboard. It's worth asking for service history.
