BMW X2: F39 and U10 generations, engines and trims

BMW X2 — a compact, sporty-looking SUV built on the same tech as the BMW X1. We look at how the F39 and U10 generations differ, which engines are most common in the used market, how the trims vary, and what to check before buying.

X2 in brief

The X2 hit the market in 2018 as a lower, more stylish alternative to the X1. It's aimed at those for whom looks and driving feel matter more than maximum space: the cabin and boot are slightly smaller than the X1's, and the ride is often firmer.

Most cars are front-wheel drive sDrive or all-wheel drive xDrive. In the Lithuanian used market, you'll mostly find F39 generation cars with 2.0-litre diesel engines, though there's also a decent selection of petrol versions.

F39 and U10 — what's the difference

The first generation F39 (2018–2023) is a short, fairly tall SUV with a hatchback body and front-wheel drive platform, shared with the X1 (F48) and MINI Countryman. It's the most popular and accessible X2 generation in the used market, with a wide choice of engines and trims.

The second generation U10 (from late 2023) has grown in size and gained a coupe-like sloping rear. The cabin is much more modern — with a large curved screen and the latest BMW infotainment system, and alongside petrol and diesel versions, there's now an electric iX2.

When choosing between generations, budget is key: the F39 is significantly cheaper and technically simpler, while the U10 is roomier and more modern, but rarer and pricier in the used market.

Engines and transmissions

The F39 generation most commonly features diesel sDrive18d and xDrive20d (around 150 and 190 hp) and petrol sDrive18i (three-cylinder 1.5-litre) and sDrive20i. There was also the more powerful xDrive25d, plug-in hybrid xDrive25e, and sporty M35i with around 300 hp from a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine.

Petrol F39s are usually paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch Steptronic gearbox, diesels with an 8-speed automatic, and there were manual versions too. The U10 generation comes standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, many engines feature a 48V mild hybrid system, and the iX2 is fully electric.

What to check when buying a used X2

For diesel cars that have done a lot of city driving, check the particulate filter (DPF) and EGR system, ask about service history and oil change intervals. During a test drive, pay attention to whether the dual-clutch gearbox shifts smoothly from a standstill and doesn't hesitate when changing gears.

M Sport trim cars with large wheels and sport suspension ride quite firmly — test drive the car on a rougher road. Check for uneven tyre wear and ensure the wheels aren't bent.

As with all popular used cars, check the mileage against service records and MOT history, and inspect the body for repainted parts and uneven gaps.

Frequently asked questions

How does the BMW X2 differ from the X1?

The technology and engines are essentially the same, but the X2 is lower, has a sportier look, and a firmer ride. The X1 is more spacious and practical, making it a better choice for families, while the X2 appeals to those who prioritise style.

Is it worth buying the X2 with front-wheel drive (sDrive)?

For most drivers, sDrive is more than adequate, especially for city and highway driving with good winter tyres. xDrive is beneficial for those who frequently drive on rough roads or in snow, but such a car will consume slightly more fuel.

Which X2 engine is best when buying used?

For those who drive mostly out of town, the xDrive20d or sDrive18d diesel is usually the most sensible choice. If you drive mostly in the city, consider the petrol sDrive18i or sDrive20i, as the diesel particulate filter requires longer journeys.
