Haval Jolion: generations, engines, and what to know before buying

The Haval Jolion is a compact Great Wall Motor (GWM) crossover introduced at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show and has been on sale in China since 2021, where it's known as the Chulian. In export markets, it goes by Jolion. We're taking a look at the generations, engines, and what buyers need to know, as this model isn't officially sold in Lithuania.

The Jolion in brief

The Jolion is built on the GWM L.E.M.O.N. platform, which is also used by the Haval Big Dog. It replaced the Haval H2. The Chinese name 'Chulian' translates to 'first love,' and 'Jolion' is its anglicised form. It was sold in China for about a year before becoming an export model.

Inside, you'll find a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch instrument cluster, and in some versions, a head-up display (HUD) projected onto the windscreen. In some markets, it offers a ventilated, electrically adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, and wireless phone charging.

Versions — what's the difference?

The Jolion is available with a petrol engine and a hybrid version, which was first unveiled in Thailand in November 2021. The hybrid has a distinct front end: revised headlights, turn signals, bumper, and grille.

In 2024, the Jolion Pro made its debut — an export version based on the Haval Chitu. It slots above the Jolion and, in some markets, replaced the mid-range Premium and Luxury trims. The refreshed 2024 Jolion also received a less powerful base engine.

Engines and transmissions

The petrol-powered Jolion comes with a 1.5-litre turbo engine. Initially, it produced around 150 hp (110 kW) and 220 Nm, but after the 2024 refresh, that's around 143 hp (105 kW) and 210 Nm. It's paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) and front-wheel drive.

The hybrid version (GW4G15H engine and electric motor) is said to produce around 190 hp (140 kW) and 375 Nm. It works with a special hybrid transmission (DHT).

What to check when buying a used Jolion

First, find out which market the car was built for and whether it meets European standards (headlights, speedometer, emission norms). There's no official importer in Lithuania.

Test the DCT gearbox (no juddering), the turbocharger condition, and the electronics — screen, cameras, driver assistance systems. In the hybrid version, ask for a battery diagnostic.
