Škoda Octavia: III and IV generations, engines and trims

Škoda Octavia is one of the most popular cars in Lithuania: spacious, practical and with technology akin to the Volkswagen Golf. We look at the most commonly found third (2013–2020) and fourth (from 2020) generations in the used market, their engines, trims and what to check when buying.

Octavia in brief

The modern Octavia has been in production since 1996 and now spans four generations. It comes in a liftback (sedan styling but with a large rear hatch) and estate – Octavia Combi – bodystyles. The sporty version is called RS, while the raised-ride four-wheel-drive estate is the Scout.

The Octavia uses the same Volkswagen Group engines and platforms as the Golf, but is larger: there's more space in the rear and boot than in most compact class cars. Because of its practicality, it's often bought by businesses and used as a taxi, so there are plenty of high-mileage examples in the used market.

III and IV generation – what's the difference

The third generation (2013–2020) is built on the MQB platform: it's lighter, roomier and more modern than the second generation. This is the most popular generation in the used market. The 2017 update brought distinctive split front headlights, larger infotainment screens and more modern equipment.

Fourth generation (from 2020) — more modern and spacious: digital instrument cluster, larger infotainment screen, more driver-assistance systems, mild hybrids (e-TEC) with DSG and plug-in hybrids iV. Early models' infotainment received criticism for sluggish performance and finicky controls.

The 2024 fourth generation refresh: revised front and rear styling, larger screen, reduced engine choices, and a more powerful RS version.

Engines and transmissions

The third generation most commonly featured 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrol engines (later 1.0 and 1.5 TSI) and 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesel engines. There was also a G-TEC version powered by natural gas, while the RS came with a 2.0 TSI or more powerful 2.0 TDI.

The fourth generation is primarily based on 1.0 and 1.5 TSI engines (with DSG — e-TEC mild hybrid), 2.0 TDI diesel, 2.0 TSI with all-wheel drive, and plug-in hybrid iV. The RS version is offered with a 2.0 TSI, 2.0 TDI engine, or as a plug-in hybrid RS iV.

Transmissions come in manual or DSG. Smaller engines are often paired with a 7-speed dry-clutch DSG, while more powerful and diesel engines get a wet-clutch DSG. Less powerful versions typically have a simpler rear suspension (torsion beam), while more powerful ones get a multi-link setup.

What to check when buying a used Octavia

Inspect the mileage carefully — according to service records and maintenance history, as many Octavias were fleet or taxi cars. Wear on seats, steering wheel, and gear shifter should match the stated mileage.

The DSG gearbox should shift smoothly: juddering when moving off or jolts when shifting often indicate a need for clutch or mechatronic repairs. For diesel cars that have done a lot of city driving, check the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR valve.

Second-generation (especially 2008–2012) cars with 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines are known for timing chain issues — a cold engine shouldn't rattle.

  • Wide range and relatively cheap spare parts
  • Economical TDI and TSI engines

Cons

  • Many cars with high mileage from taxi or fleet use
  • Dry clutches in DSG gearboxes can be pricey to replace
  • Early fourth-gen models have outdated infotainment and controls

Frequently asked questions

Which Octavia generation is best when buying used?

For many buyers, the best choice is the facelifted 2017–2020 third generation: reliable, spacious, and accessible. If you prioritise new features and driver assistance systems, opt for the fourth generation, but avoid the very earliest models.

Liftback or Combi?

Both body styles are highly practical: the liftback has a generous boot, with the tailgate opening along with the glass. The Combi offers an even larger boot and more convenient loading area, making it a popular choice for families and frequent travellers.

Which Octavia engine is the most economical?

The most economical are the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels and the 1.0 TSI petrol engine. For mostly city driving, it often makes more sense to choose the petrol TSI, as the diesel particulate filter requires longer journeys.
