Škoda Superb: III and IV generations, engines and trims

Škoda Superb — the largest and most luxurious Škoda car, renowned for having one of the roomiest interiors in its class. We look at the most popular third generation (2015–2023) and the latest fourth (from 2024): engines, trims, their comparison and what to check when buying.

Superb in brief

The modern Superb has been in production since 2001 and comes in four generations. From the second generation onwards, it has been offered as a liftback and estate — Superb Combi. The Superb uses Volkswagen Group technology, similar to the Passat, but stands out with its exceptionally large distance between the rows of seats and a spacious boot.

The Superb is valued for its space, comfort and economical diesels, making it popular with families, high-mileage drivers and businesses. As a result, the used market often sees cars with high mileage from business use.

III and IV generation — what's the difference

The third generation (2015–2023) is built on the MQB platform: compared to the second generation, it became more stylish, roomier and more modern. This is the most popular generation in the used market. The 2019 update brought matrix LED headlights and the larger load space estate Scout, and soon after came the plug-in hybrid iV.

The fourth generation (from 2024, unveiled at the end of 2023) is produced alongside the new Passat. It is even roomier, features a large central screen, a gear selector by the steering wheel and physical control knobs, which make daily use easier. The plug-in hybrid can travel significantly further on electric power than the third generation iV.

Engines and Gearboxes

Third-gen models most commonly feature 2.0 TDI diesels (around 150 and 190–200 hp) and 1.4 and 1.5 TSI petrol engines. The most powerful is the 2.0 TSI with four-wheel drive, and since 2020, a plug-in hybrid iV with a 1.4 TSI engine has been offered.

The fourth-gen range is anchored by the 1.5 TSI mild hybrid, 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI engines (the more powerful ones come with four-wheel drive) and the plug-in hybrid iV with a 1.5 TSI engine. The fourth-gen is available only with the automatic DSG gearbox.

Third-gen models come with either manual or DSG gearboxes: smaller petrol engines are usually paired with a dry-clutch DSG, while diesels and more powerful ones get a wet-clutch DSG. Four-wheel drive (4x4) is engaged via an electro-hydraulic clutch, which requires periodic oil changes.

What to check when buying a used Superb

Check the mileage against service records and the vehicle’s MOT history – many Superbs were company cars. Wear on the seats, steering wheel and gear stick should match the stated mileage.

The DSG gearbox should shift smoothly, without juddering when moving off; ask if the wet-clutch DSG oil has been changed. For diesel cars that have done a lot of urban miles, check the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and EGR valve, and for 4x4 versions, if the four-wheel-drive clutch oil has been changed.

If you’re considering an older second-gen model, pay attention to oil consumption and the condition of the timing chain on early TSI engines. For the plug-in hybrid, ask about the battery condition and charging equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Which Superb generation is best to buy used?

For many buyers, the best choice is the refreshed 2019–2023 III generation Superb: modern, spacious and much more affordable than the IV generation. The IV generation is worth considering if the latest tech and a longer electric range for the plug-in hybrid are important.

Superb or Passat — what's the difference?

Both cars use similar Volkswagen Group technology and engines. The Superb usually offers more rear space and a larger boot, and often comes with more equipment in the used market for a similar price.

Liftback or Combi?

The liftback's boot is already very spacious, and the rear hatch opens with the glass, making loading easy. The Combi offers even more space and a larger boot opening, making it a popular choice for families and frequent travellers.
