Toyota Prius: XW30, XW50 and XW60 generations, engines and trims

The Toyota Prius was the first mass-produced hybrid car and remains one of the most popular taxis and ride-hailing vehicles in Lithuania. We look at the XW30, XW50 and XW60 generations, engines, trims and what to check before buying a used Prius.

Prius in brief

The Prius has been in production since 1997. In the used market, you'll mostly find XW30 and XW50 generations. Alongside the standard five-door hatchback, there was also a seven-seater Prius+ and plug-in hybrid versions.

The Prius is praised for its exceptionally low fuel consumption in the city and reliable hybrid system. Some cars sold in Lithuania are imported from the US, so it's crucial to check their history using the VIN code.

XW30, XW50 and XW60 — what's the difference

XW30 (2009–2015) — the most accessible Prius today. It's spacious, simple and economical, but most cars have high mileage, and the interior trim is basic.

XW50 (2015–2022) — the first car on the TNGA platform: better handling, quieter cabin, lower running costs and more safety systems. A plug-in hybrid version, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, was also produced with a different front and rear design.

XW60 (from 2023) — a completely new, low and sporty design. In Europe, it's sold only as a plug-in hybrid, so it's rare in the used market.

Engines and gearboxes

The 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor is used in both the XW30 and XW50 generations: combined power is 136 hp for the XW30 and 122 hp for the XW50. Both generations feature a beltless e-CVT transmission, which is considered very reliable.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, based on the XW50, has a larger battery and, according to the manufacturer, can travel around 50 km on electric power alone. In Europe, the XW60 generation offers a 2.0 Plug-in Hybrid with a combined power of 223 hp.

The seven-seater Prius+ has the same 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain, but due to its larger size, it's slower, especially when fully loaded.

What to check when buying a used Prius

Check if the car was used for taxi or ride-hailing services—such Prius models often have hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock, a worn-out interior, and suspension issues. For cars imported from the USA, check the history via the VIN: some were sold after accidents.

It's worth checking the condition of the hybrid battery at a service centre, as well as inspecting the battery cooling air vent in the cabin, as dust can clog it and cause the battery to overheat. In high-mileage XW30 generation cars, issues with the EGR system clogging and head gasket failures are common—ensure the coolant level isn't dropping and the engine is running smoothly.

In older Prius models, expensive brake system (ABS module) failures are common, so there should be no warning lights on the instrument cluster. Also, check the 12V battery—if it's flat, the car won't start.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Prius hybrid batteries last?

Toyota hybrid batteries usually last a long time, but in taxis or high-mileage cars, the battery may be worn out. Have its condition checked by a service before buying.

Which Prius generation is best to buy used?

For many, the best choice is the XW50: it's more economical, quieter, and handles better than the XW30. The XW30 is worth considering if the budget is tight, but then the technical condition is especially important.

Is it worth buying a US-imported Prius?

It might be worth it if the history is clear. Check the VIN history, ask for import documents, and inspect for signs of a repaired body: uneven gaps, repainted parts, replaced safety pillars.

Is it worth buying a Prius+?

The Prius+ is suitable for larger families — it has seven seats and the same reliable hybrid drivetrain. However, it's slower when fully loaded, and the third row is only comfortable for kids.
