Aion Y: batteries, power and what to know before buying
The Aion Y is a compact electric crossover that GAC’s Aion has been producing since 2021. We look at the battery options, power, features and what you need to know before buying such a car in Lithuania.
Aion Y in brief
The Aion Y concept was unveiled in November 2020 at the Guangzhou Auto Show, and it hit the market in the second half of 2021. It’s the fourth model from the Aion brand, built on the GAC GEP 2.0 platform. In China, it’s offered in five trim levels, with a taxi and ride-hailing version called the Aion Y Pio — it features different wings and a front bumper.
The interior is minimalist, with a 14.5-inch horizontal centre screen and digital dials. The car comes with 5G connectivity, the ADiGO 3.0 driver assistance system and automatic parking. Its successor, the Aion N60, with battery swapping capability, is due in 2026.
Batteries and power
Three Magazine Battery options are available, developed by GAC itself: 60, 70 and 80 kWh. These can be either NMC or LFP types. According to the NEDC cycle, the range is 460, 500 and 600 km respectively.
The front axle is driven by a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor: with the 60 kWh battery, it produces 100 kW (around 134 hp), while the 70 and 80 kWh versions deliver 135 kW (around 184 hp). The manufacturer quotes energy consumption of around 13.8 kWh/100 km under certain conditions; real-world consumption depends on speed, air temperature and driving style.
Equipment and versions
The „Aion Y“ is offered in China with five trim levels. The car features driver-assistance systems such as collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and driver-monitoring.
The facial recognition system can automatically adjust certain settings. Trim names vary by market, so always check the specific car's equipment when buying.
What to know when buying an Aion Y
First, check the battery type (NMC or LFP), capacity, and condition: request a battery report and charging history. NEDC ranges are usually optimistic, so estimate the real-world range conservatively.
Some cars were used as taxis or ride-hailing vehicles (like the „Aion Y Pio“ and others), so they often have high mileage — ask how the specific car was used. Imported cars from China may have Chinese charging connectors and software, so find out if it meets Lithuanian requirements and who will perform the technical inspection.
