Nissan Qashqai: J11 and J12 generations, engines and trims

Nissan Qashqai — the model that popularised compact crossovers in Europe, and one of the most common used cars on the market. We look at all three generations, focusing mainly on the J11 (2013–2021) and J12 (from 2021): engines, trims and what to check when buying.

Qashqai in brief

The first Qashqai generation arrived in 2006–2007 and offered a unique blend: the size of a compact hatchback, but with a higher driving position and a rugged look. This formula worked — the Qashqai became one of Europe's best-selling crossovers, with most European-bound cars built at Nissan's Sunderland plant in the UK.

The Qashqai is praised for its comfort, high driving position and frugal running costs. Most models are front-wheel drive: four-wheel drive (ALL-MODE 4x4-i) is only offered with certain engines, so 4x4 versions are rare in the used market.

How J11 and J12 differ

The J10 generation (2007–2013) is the cheapest option today; there was also a seven-seat Qashqai+2 version. However, most of these cars are now quite old and have high mileage, so the key factor is their mechanical condition.

The J11 generation (2013–2021) is significantly more modern: a higher-quality interior, more driver assistance systems and a wide range of engines, including diesels. The 2017 update brought a new front end and better interior materials, while higher trims later gained the ProPILOT driver assistance system. This is the most popular generation in the used market.

The J12 generation (from 2021) is built on the CMF-C platform — it's larger, more modern and often comes with a digital instrument cluster. Diesel engines are a thing of the past: only mild hybrids and the e-Power version are offered. The 2024 model has been refreshed.

Engines and transmissions

The J11 generation features petrol engines like the 1.2 DIG-T (115 hp) and 1.6 DIG-T (163 hp), with the 1.3 DIG-T (140 and 160 hp) introduced in 2018. Diesels include the popular 1.5 dCi (110–115 hp), 1.6 dCi (130 hp), and later the 1.7 dCi (150 hp).

The J12 generation offers the 1.3 DIG-T with a 12 V mild hybrid system (140 or 158 hp) and the e-Power: here, the petrol engine only generates electricity, while an electric motor drives the wheels (around 190 hp).

Transmissions include a 6-speed manual or the stepless Xtronic (CVT). The J11 generation with the 1.3 DIG-T engine also offered a 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) automatic.

What to check when buying a used Qashqai

The Xtronic (CVT) transmission should operate smoothly: juddering, slipping, or hesitation when moving off indicates wear, and repairs can be costly. Ask if the transmission fluid has been changed.

Some 1.2 DIG-T engines have increased oil consumption, so check the oil level and service history. Diesel 1.5 and 1.6 dCi engines, especially those driven mostly in the city, should have their particulate filter (DPF) and twin-mass flywheel inspected.

In J12 models, check the operation of the multimedia and assistance systems, and in e-Power versions, look for any error messages. For all cars, verify the mileage against service records, inspect the suspension components, and brakes.

Frequently asked questions

Which Qashqai engine should you choose?

The J11 is most often specified with the 1.5 dCi diesel — it's economical if you do a lot of out-of-town driving — or the 1.3 DIG-T petrol engine. For those who mostly drive in the city, the petrol engine or J12 e-Power is more suitable.

Does the Qashqai have four-wheel drive?

Some versions do (ALL-MODE 4x4-i), but most used Qashqais have front-wheel drive only. The J11 is often paired with the 1.6 dCi diesel in 4x4 guise.

How does e-Power differ from a conventional hybrid?

In the e-Power version, the petrol engine doesn't drive the wheels — it just generates electricity, and the car is driven by an electric motor. Therefore, driving feels similar to an electric vehicle, but you don't need to charge it from the power grid.
