Škoda Kodiaq: I and II generations, engines and trims

Škoda Kodiaq — a large SUV that seats up to seven passengers, popular among families in Lithuania. We look at the I (2016–2024) and II (from 2024) generations, their engines, trims, and what to check when buying used.

Kodiaq in brief

Kodiaq — Škoda’s first large SUV, built on the MQB platform. It’s offered with 5 or 7 seats, front-wheel drive or 4x4. The sporty version is called RS, the rugged one — Scout, and the sporty-looking one — Sportline.

Kodiaq’s tech is close to the VW Tiguan Allspace and SEAT Tarraco, but it’s often praised for its practicality: a large boot, spacious interior, and Simply Clever solutions, like the umbrella in the front doors or door sill guards.

I and II generations — what’s the difference

The I generation (2016–2024) is the most popular on the used market: a wide range of engines and trims. In 2021, it was refreshed: the front end was restyled, LED (often matrix) headlights were added, engines were updated, and the RS got a 2.0 TSI petrol engine instead of a diesel.

The II generation (from 2024) is larger, with a new interior, a large multimedia screen, and physical controls (Smart Dials), while the gear shifter has been moved to the steering wheel. It’s only offered with a DSG gearbox, and the big news is the plug-in hybrid iV, which can travel around 100 km on electric power alone.

Most people choose a used Kodiaq from the 2019–2023 I generation models, while the II generation is still quite new and pricier on the used market.

Engines and transmissions

Most commonly found are the 1.4 TSI (125–150 HP), later replaced by the 1.5 TSI (150 HP), 2.0 TSI (around 180–190 HP, with 4x4) and 2.0 TDI (usually 150 HP, more powerful ones around 190–200 HP). The RS up to 2021 had a 2.0 BiTDI (240 HP), and after the update, a 2.0 TSI (245 HP).

Next up is the 1.5 TSI e-TEC mild hybrid (150 HP), 2.0 TSI (204 HP, 4x4), 2.0 TDI (150 HP, and around 190 HP with 4x4) and the plug-in hybrid 1.5 TSI iV (204 HP).

Initially, the less powerful versions were offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox, others with DSG. Four-wheel drive is provided by a Haldex-type coupling, whose fluid needs to be changed periodically.

What to check when buying a used Kodiaq

The DSG gearbox should shift smoothly, without judders or shocks. Ask if the DSG fluid has been changed according to the schedule, and in 4x4 versions, also the Haldex coupling fluid.

For diesel engines, check the diesel particulate filter (DPF), EGR valve, and AdBlue system: their failures (e.g., pump or heater) can occur and be costly. If you mostly drive in the city, it's often more sensible to choose the petrol 1.5 TSI.

Many Kodiaqs were company cars, so check the service records and maintenance history. In the 7-seat version, check the third-row seat mechanism, and in all cars, the body for repainted parts.

Most families will find the Ambition or Style trims with the 2.0 TDI (150 PS) or 1.5 TSI engines to be the best choice. The Sportline and RS are worth considering for their looks and dynamism, but they come at a premium.

Pros

  • Spacious interior and boot, with optional seven seats
  • Practical Simply Clever solutions
  • Wide range of engines and 4x4 versions
  • Comfortable ride, quiet cabin

Cons

  • The third row of seats is best suited to children
  • Expensive repairs for DSG and AdBlue systems
  • Petrol 4x4 versions are thirsty

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kodiaq suitable for seven passengers?

The Kodiaq with seven seats is great for larger families, but the third row is best for children or short trips. With the third row raised, boot space is significantly reduced.

Should you choose a petrol or diesel Kodiaq?

For those who do a lot of out-of-town driving and frequently tow a trailer, the 2.0 TDI is the best choice. If you mostly drive in the city and cover short distances, the 1.5 TSI is more sensible – it doesn’t require a particulate filter or AdBlue maintenance.

Do you need a Kodiaq with 4x4?

Many drivers in Lithuania are content with front-wheel drive. 4x4 is useful if you often drive on rough terrain, winter roads that aren't cleared, or if you're towing a heavy trailer, but such a version is more expensive and consumes more fuel.

How does the Kodiaq differ from the Škoda Karoq?

The Karoq is a smaller compact SUV with five seats, while the Kodiaq is larger, with optional seven seats and a significantly bigger boot. The technology and engines of both models are quite similar.
