Honda CBR1000RR: Fireblade generations from 1992 onwards, and what to check

Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade — the litre-class sportsbike whose roots go back to the 1992 CBR900RR. We look at the generations, the tech and what to check when buying used.

CBR1000RR in brief

The Fireblade story began in 1992 with the CBR900RR — a light and powerful sportsbike. Since 2004, the family has been known as the CBR1000RR and is one of Honda’s flagship sports models.

Due to its power and high price, there’s a large supply of used Fireblades, but many examples have been track-used or ridden hard, so condition is key.

Generations — what’s the difference

Early generations (CBR900RR, 1992–2003) have a conventional four-cylinder engine and basic equipment. The CBR1000RR (from 2004) got a bigger engine and an improved chassis.

Later updates (2006, 2008, 2012, 2017) changed the styling, equipment and electronics. In 2020, the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade arrived — a significantly more powerful generation with advanced electronics.

Engine and gearbox

The engine is a four-cylinder, liquid-cooled unit; 998 cm³ from 2004 onwards, with power ranging from around 170–190 hp depending on the version. The RR-R version makes over 200 hp.

The gearbox is a six-speed manual, with drive to the rear wheel via a chain. Later versions come with ABS and traction control.

What to check when buying a used CBR1000RR

Sportsbikes are often track-used, so look for signs of crashes: scuffed bodywork, bent footpegs, crash bungs, and exhaust. Check the frame for damage.

The engine should start without issue and run smoothly. Check the chain, sprockets, brake discs and pads, fork seals and cooling system.

Request the service history and check if the motorcycle has been modified.
