Lotus 20 in brief

The Lotus 20 was a Formule Junior class car, created for the 1961 season as a successor to the Lotus 18. It is a race car, not a road car, so in this article, we mainly discuss its technology and purpose.

Due to its small size and simple construction, the Formule Junior class was an important training ground for young drivers, and the Lotus 20 was one of its famous representatives.

Technology

The car had a space frame with a fiberglass body. At the front, there were double cross members, and at the rear, a lower cross member, while a fixed-length half-shaft served as the upper connection. Initially, all wheels had Alfin drum brakes, later switching to disc brakes at the front and internal drum brakes at the rear.

The standard engine is the Cosworth Mk.IV, and the gearbox is from the Renault Dauphine or a modified Hewland VW. Compared to the Lotus 18, the 20 had a significantly smaller front area and a lower center of gravity, as the driver sat almost lying down.

Variants and usage

The Lotus 20B was almost the same, but with a stabilizer and standard internal drum brakes at the rear. Sometimes, the 20B was fitted with the Lotus Twin Cam engine, so such cars were not Formule Junior but competed in Formule Libre and other series, such as the Tasman.

De Lotus 20 werd geregistreerd en in 1965 namens de Zuid-Afrikaanse Grand Prix — Dave Charlton slaagde niet voor de voorrondes, terwijl Brian Raubenheimer zich terugtrok vanwege een probleem met de versnellingsbak tijdens de trainingen.

Waar te zien en of te koop

De Lotus 20 van 1962 staat tentoongesteld in het Canadese automuseum — hij hangt onder het plafond op de tweede verdieping. Er zijn meer exemplaren in privécollecties en ze nemen deel aan historische races, zoals de Silverstone Classic.

Originele auto's worden zelden verkocht; als er een 'Lotus 20' wordt aangeboden, moet je de chassisnummer en documenten controleren.
